According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, nearly 1.5 million Americans have experienced pathological gambling, which occurs when there is a dependence, harm, or lack of control over gambling habits (Samhsa). Samhsa goes on to explain that pathological gambling can be sparked by gambling as little as once a week. It may even derive by going as little as once a month, or once a week. Unfortunately, this is what transpired to Angie Bachmann, in Charles Duhigg’s Power of Habit. Mother of three and wife to a full-time working husband, Angie was frequently left in an empty home, with nothing to do. Spending her days watching game shows, such as: The Price is Right, Angie would often times find herself lonely and bored (Duhigg 246). Angie decided that if she got through the week without withering of boredom, then she would be rewarded with an excursion to the casino. The trips started off once a week with a few hours and a couple hundred dollars. Her addiction quickly ju mp started from once a week to three times a week. She was secretly attending the casino, spending a couple thousand, and playing multiple hands at once (Duhigg 247). Angie finally felt as if she had something to be proud of; she wasn’t just an orthodox, stay-at-home mom. The casino did as much as they could to make Angie feel special, almost like a celebrity. For instance, Angie would arrive at the casino in a limo, dine out in the buffet, and live lavishly in the casino suites. Personal Narrative Music and I Essay Music and I Ever since I was a small child, I have loved music. The strong, steady beats, the entrancing melodies, and the lyrics that vary between heart-warming and heart-wrenching have always had an unexplainable affect on my life. Music seems to have the ability to change certain aspects of my world. If I am in a foul mood, an angry girl band can make my rotten attitude even more irresistibly awful. When I am happy, any sort of upbeat, dance-to-me kind of music enhances my joy that much more. I love to study to classical music, daydream to classical music, even sleep to classical music. Through my teen years, I became a fan of the often melodramatic country music that is still preset on my radio today. No matter what kind of music it is, when I turn it on, my mood morphs easily into whatever kind of music I am listening to. Music has absolutely been an enormous part of my life and who I am. However, this is not to say that I have much musical talent. I did perform in the choir in elementary school, and I played the flute for four years through middle school, but one day I came to a simple decision. When it comes to music, I am a much better enjoyer of it than a producer of it. When I am alone in the car, my sing-along-to-whatever-is-on-the-radio voice is fab-u-lous. However, as soon as any else climbs into the car with me my talent suddenly dwindles. My larynx doesn’t seem to appreciate an audience when it is trying to perform. Thus, my musical enjoyment stems directly from listening. My love for music has existed for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, my mom and I had a special song that she would sing to me if I was sick, sad, or sometimes just as a treat before bed. To this day, â€Å"You are My Sunshine† has the power to make me teary-eyed. Because it is not a song that is often played on the radio, I hardly ever hear it anymore. However, whenever someone is whistling it as they walk by or I hear it on a movie (who doesn’t love Beaches?), my heart soars and a smile creeps across my face as my eyes begin to swell. The song simply has the ability to bring back a million happy memories from my childhood within its first few notes. When my older sister got married, I wanted to do something special to remind her of our childhood and to take her mind off of the wedding stress as we were getting ready the day of the wedding. I thought back to all of the songs we loved when we were little, many of which were sung by the infamous one-hit-wonders of the eighties. I think each generation has songs that are popular to them and that they will never forget the lyrics to. However, if you mentioned the artists that sang them or the names of other songs they sang, no one would have a clue what you were saying. Still, the songs are precious to the people that grew up with them. When my sister and I listened to the CD I made for her in the limousine on the way to the ceremony, we were both brought right back to the days when we were growing up. Wedding seem to provide a perfect atmosphere for the sentimental music that is sometimes otherwise condemned as â€Å"cheesy.†My sister, as the Matron of Honor at my wedding, threw in two wonderful surprises as she was giving her toast. The first surprise was that my younger brother helped her, and the second surprise came just as they began to speak. Suddenly, music swelled behind their voices. As a private sibling joke, my brother and sister and I have always teasingly sang â€Å"You are the Wind Beneath my Wings† to each. The music that began just as they did was that very song. Incredibly enough, this special effect that was meant as a joke made me burst into tears. I can’t explain why, because although they weren’t tears of joy, I certainly wasn’t sad. Maybe my tears were that of appreciation for my siblings’ support. Whatever the reason, my tears triggered my younger brother’s emotions, and then he and my sister both shed a few tears as they finished their toast. The song that was such a joke to all of us had somehow become presious and sacred at the same time. Music and Western Civilization EssayThis semester I am taking a class on integrating music into the elementary school classroom. I have seen some amazing techniques from my instructor, but the most powerful demonstration I have seen was presented by one of my classmates for our final projects. She read a book to the class while music played in the background. She read a children’s book about pirates called Tough Boris that is not going to be winning a Newberry or Caldecott Award anytime soon. However, Fanfare for the Common Man played as she read it, timed just right, gave me goose bumps. Each time she finished a line, the music seemed to respond to what she had said. For example, as she read the line â€Å"All pirates are greedy,† the music in the background blared as though to signify the horrific trait that greed really is. When she read the line â€Å"All pirates cry,† the music suddenly became softer and let her audience know that pirates are people too and they really do have feelings. The intensity of the music made an okay book seem unreal and amazing. To prove her point about the effectiveness of music in life, she also brought up the example of the significance of music in movies. From the scary horror flicks of today to the older Alfred Hitchcock movies to Gone with the Wind, music plays an immense role in the emotions felt while watching a movie. Imagine the music that plays as the protagonist slowly creeps up the stairs toward the monster hiding in the bedroom. The intensity and volume of the music let us know that we are supposed to be afraid for this person and their safety. As soon as the tension is released through the actor’s escape or some other form of success, the music quiets, becomes more cheerful, or may even cease all together. A scary movie just wouldn’t be the same if it were watched without the music, nor would a great romance be so heart-wrenching if the music didn’t swell in the background as the lovers were reunited. Realities such as this make me sure that I am not the only person who feels the effects of music on them in their everyday lives. In fact, I have only met one or two people in my life who don’t like to listen to music while they drive. No one I know has ever told me that they don’t like music. I would venture to say that enjoying music is probably innate in us as human beings. Although each person has a distinctly unique taste of music, people still like to listen to it and enjoy it. My own personal experiences and attitudes to music have stemmed from my own life and relationships. My new husband and I just finished putting up our very first Christmas tree together. I was pleasantly amazed when he flipped on the radio to Christmas tunes and began singing along to them with me. These holiday songs are only another example to me of how powerful music is. As soon as we starting singing while we were putting up ornaments on the tree, our moods were lifted easily from the stress of looming finals and another Christmas working in retail. Although this is the first year I won’t be spending Christmas at home, I know that all I will have to do is listen to the old familiar notes of â€Å"Holy Jolly Christmas† to feel right at home.

Walking Across Egypt Walking Across Egypt Mattie Rigsbee is the main character in Clyde Edgerton's southern style novel, Walking Across Egypt. Mattie is a seventy-eight year old widow with two middle-aged children. Living alone in a small house, she makes sure that everything is taken care of. She cooks, cleans, mows the lawn, and takes up numerous responsibilities with the church. She is a very caring person with many friends and a family that loves her dearly. At the time this novel takes place, Mattie is at a turning point in her life. Confusion disturbed her, because the things that people are telling her are not the words that she is ready or willing to hear. Although begins to display some signs of aging, and her family is trying to convince her to slow down her lifestyle, Mattie's character and mind setting prohibits her from becoming the stereotypical elder. She must make a decision in which direction to turn. As Mattie grows older, she notices that she is beginning to display some signs that people in her state of North Carolina associate with the elderly. These signs are influencing her decisions about what she thinks she can and cannot do. She displays typical, elderly forgetfulness as she washes the toilet seat with mouthwash rather than with alcohol. And again displays it as she falls through the bottomless rocking chair. Later she displays physical inability when she asks her son Robert about helping with some yard work, which she had always taken care of before. "I'm too old to keep a dog," (20) she says to the dogcatcher as he is leaving with a brown fice that showed up on her doorstep. "Besides, I'm slowing down," she says to her son during lunch. The stereotypes of the elderly are influencing Mattie's life. She is telling herself not to do things because of her age whether or not she is physically able to do them, simply because people associate age with inability and dependence upon others. Her family and friends are expecting and encouraging this dependence. Elaine and Robert, Mattie's two unmarried children, along with other family and friends, are encouraging her to be what they expect a seventy-eight year old woman to be. They talk about how she needs to get rest because she is slowing down and can't keep going as steady as she seems to think. When she decided to try and help a young juvenile, Wesley Benfield, become a better person by taking him to church and offering him to stay the night with her, Robert thought that Mattie was sick. "Robert was thinking about the symptoms. What condition was his mother entering? Was it a phase of some sort? Was she having some of those tiny strokes they talk about? Or Alzheimer's? .... Maybe she needed a long rest. She was slowing down." (177-178) He would have to tell Elaine about this incident, because she is having the same fears as he. Pearl Turnage, Mattie's older sister, has given in to the stereotypes that are now plaguing Mattie, and insists that she do the same. In fact, she invites Mattie to accompany her to the funeral home where they will each pick out a casket that they are to be buried in. Pearl pushes the subject, as if to force Mattie into realizing that she doesn't have much time left to live. Pearl also begins talking to Mattie about the past and the fun that they once had, as if to tell Mattie that those days are over and that it is time for her to begin a new chapter in her life. The future that Pearl has planned for herself, however, is totally contrary to the lifestyle that Mattie has chosen to pursue. Mattie wants more of those good times to talk about. Mattie has grown up with the same expectations of elderly people as everyone else, however, she chooses not to live her life based on these expectations, but rather on how her feelings lead her. At the beginning of the novel, she is unsure about what direction she wants to take in life. She turns down the dog, and says that she needs to slow down, but at the end she makes a realization about the person that she wishes to be. She makes the comment at the beginning about how she is "too old" to keep a dog, yet at the end, she asks whether or not he is still in the pound. She even is laughing about falling through the bottom of the rocking chair even though she was

The Burning Bush was first introduced in the Book of Exodus in the Bible. Moses was grazing in the pastures just like any other day when he noticed something burning in the distance. He found it to be an ordinary desert bush, but the fire was far from ordinary. General aviation thus consists of all flights that are not â€Å"conducted by the military or the scheduled airlines† (NBAA, 2012a) and is therefore considered to be an important aspect of most business operations. This is because, business aviation is said to â€Å"complement airline services in satisfying the nation’s business transportation requirements† (Wensveen, 2011: 133) which could not be achieved through scheduled transportation alone. Non-scheduled, also known as on-demand, transportation, therefore enables businesses to use air transportation as and when they need it, which is highly beneficial and helps to facilitate economic growth and world trade. It also â€Å"boosts productivity across the global economy† (Rochat, 2004: 9) and allows businesses to invest in different countries, which advances the economy overall. Whilst there are significant economic benefits of business aviation, however, it has been questioned whether it is a luxury or a necessity. This is largely due to the different types of people that use on-demand transportation since it is unclear whether the more expensive use of business aviation really is necessary (Sheehan, 2003: 1). Arguments that Business Aviation Operations is a Luxury It is undeniable that business aviation has become a way of life for many successful businesses. Because of this, it is very difficult not to associate this type of travel with being more of a luxury than a necessity since many would argue that business travel can be conducted in a more economical manner. This was certainly recognised by White and Bruton (2010: 330) when they viewed private jets as â€Å"unnecessary expenses† that could be avoided. The accuracy of this statement will undoubtedly be open to debate but, given the availability of business travel through scheduled transportation, the use of private jets may simply be a personal preference as opposed to a business need. Accordingly, it has often been pointed out that â€Å"business aviation is a costly luxury that has no place in the modern business environment† (Craig, 2012). This is because; costs need to be managed effectively if a business is to thrive, which is why a lot of businesses are actually consi dering videoconferencing as opposed to travelling: â€Å"42 percent of 610 business travellers and corporate travel managers responding to a 2008 poll by Business Traveller Magazine said they were exploring alternatives to business trips, including video or Web conferences† (Inc, 2012: 1). In light of this, it could be said that business travel is unnecessary and therefore a mere luxury given that the majority of business activity can be conducted through video or web conferencing. Regardless of this, business aviation does appear to be on the rise and it is unlikely that innovative technology will replace business travel anytime soon. This which is evident by the findings of the Confederation of British Industry in 2001 when it was made clear that; â€Å"Despite the promises of the 1990s that video-conferencing and e-working would reduce its need, business aviation travel grew by 22% between 1995 and 1998 and is predicted to double on the 1998 level by 2015† (Leathley, 2004: 36). Consequently, although business aviation can be replaced, there is a great reluctance to do so since businesses would prefer to travel and undertake meetings in a face to face setting. Whilst this may not be the most cost effective way of conducting business, it is unlikely to change a ny time soon and as noted by Beaverstock (2010, 227); â€Å"video conferencing has had no noticeable impact on business traffic.† Arguably, this signifies that whilst there are other avenues available for businesses, individuals still prefer to travel in style, which demonstrates that business aviation is widely considered a luxury advantage to conducting business (Patiky, 2012). Arguments that Business Aviation Operations is a Necessity Not all agree that business aviation operations are a luxury and instead it has been argued by the NBAA in relation to their ‘No Plane No Gain Campaign’ (NBAA, 2012b) that air-transportation is vital for any business. Hence, it is believed that shareholder value is greatly increased where business aviation is utilised since those companies that were found to have used business aviation during and before the recession were better protected from the effects of the recession than those companies that did not use business aviation (NEXA, 2012). This clearly illustrates how effective business aviation is and although this type of travel is seen as luxurious, the main objective of using on-demand transportation is to provide frequency and convenience to businesses. Hence, as clarified by Capell; â€Å"instead of Kobe steaks and champagne, what passengers really want is frequency and convenience† (Cappell and Reena, 2007: 46). Accordingly, whilst private jets have become a symbol of unnecessary expense, for the majority of businesses air transportation is crucial to their business. Moreover, it has even been argued by some businesses that whilst their private jets are in fact comfortable they are not luxurious which brings the prior arguments into disrepute (CBS, 2009). Thus, because of the advantages business aviation brings to a business, it seems necessary for their continued use. In addition, whilst the use of some private jets for business purposes may be less luxurious than others, this should not indicate that they are unnecessary. This is because, as has been put forward by McClellan (1991: 51); â€Å"business airplanes are useful, productive and make certain trips possible that could not be accomplished by any other means.† He went on to question whether they are also a luxury and concluded that although they are a luxury, there is nothing wrong with that. This is because, he added; â€Å"the fall of socialism proves that we need to strive for things beyond the bare-bone necessities. We do not need to apologise for the luxury of airplanes or their exclusivity.† Essentially, whilst business aviation is deemed to be a necessity, this does not mean that it is not also a luxury, yet businesses should not be prevented from using it merely because of this fact alone. This is because; economic growth and innovation is created from effective busine ss production and if businesses can function more effectively through the use of air-transportation then this should be promoted rather than stifled. Flexibility is one of the main needs of a business and if business aviation provides such flexibility then the use of on-demand transportation is to be welcomed. Arguments that Business Aviation Operations is both a Luxury and a Necessity Conversely, it has been argued that although flexibility is an important aspect of any business, it is unnecessary for businesses to have private jets. This is because the majority of airlines in today’s society are able to offer a similar level of flexibility that one would acquire from a private jet: â€Å"Given the flexibility of and high level of service offered by many traditional airlines, the question remains as to why so many business traveller are using private aircraft† (Beaverstock, 2010: 90). This is particularly true in relation to the more price-sensitive small and medium sized enterprises since the costs of travelling privately will be disproportionate to the outcomes that are achieved. Consequently, whilst business travellers do require the flexibility and convenience of business aviation, they also prefer to travel in style and comfort.   Therefore, are therefore are elements of luxury and necessity in business aviation operations and in deciding whet her this type of travel is simply an unnecessary expense will be dependent upon the individual business. This is because, all businesses have different needs and requirements, and whilst one business may require that extra bit of flexibility, which would be considered proportionate in light of the costs, another business may be travelling by private jet simply because they want to indulge in the luxury surroundings. Regardless of whether businesses make use of scheduled or unscheduled air transportation, it is evident that many business operations do need to be undertaken face to face. And, in today’s globalised economy business aviation has never been more important. Nonetheless, it is questionable whether business aviation is easily accessible for smaller companies and unless an efficient global management system can be produced, businesses will not be advanced. As put by Greer (2011): â€Å"In today’s economy, where the fast growth of emerging markets outpaces America and the developed world, if you haven’t gone global yet, it’s time to get moving.† However, it was also stated that; â€Å"going global is easier said than done - especially for smaller companies. One of the biggest challenges they face is how to manage a diverse group of people across a broad geographic scope† (Greer: 2011). Arguably, it is palpable that in order for a business to grow , globalisation of that business is a necessity. Nevertheless, unless business aviation can be integrated into business operations, it is unlikely that an effective global management system will be established. This clearly illustrates the importance of business aviation and although it may be considered a luxury by many, it is undoubtedly a necessity. Conclusion Overall, whilst business aviation is considered to be the use of any â€Å"general aviation† aircraft for a business purpose, it seems as though personal advantages are also being acquired from its use. This is simply due to the luxury surroundings that private aircrafts have and although business aviation is necessary for the economy and globalisation, businesses do prefer to travel in style, which can be considered another reason why many businesses choose non-scheduled transportation over scheduled transportation. Whilst many would argue that this is simply an unnecessary business expense, because of the fact that business activity can be conducted through other means such as video or web conferencing, it seems as though the flexibility and convenience that business aviation provides outweighs the cost implications. This will, nevertheless, be dependent upon the type of business that is utilising this type of travel because whilst it may be deemed suitable for large compani es, it may not be for small and medium sized businesses. Still, because, shareholder value is greatly increased where business aviation is used, it seems vital that the majority of businesses carry on using this type of transportation. Winning the position takes a lot of work, but you can absolutely make it happen. Why should you trust me?I was my Junior Class President and Student Government President my senior year, so I know what it takes to get there. In this article, I've outlined every step you need to take to become class president: starting with just getting on student council freshman year, all the way through running ina big election as a senior. Why Do You Want to Be Class President? Before I talk about how to get elected, I want youto think about why you want to become class president. Do you want to improve school dances? Do you want to have a wider variety of school lunch options? Create a class field trip? Start a fundraiser? All of these reasons are legitimate. You need to figure out what your own goal is. If you're having trouble, sit down and brainstorm. Think about all the events your student government plans. Which did you attend? Were there issues at these events? What could have been done better? Is it something you could change? This brainstorming should lead you to some ideas of why you want to become president of your class or school. Why do you need a reason to want to be class president? It'll keep you motivated during your campaign, and it'll help you explain to your classmates why they should vote for you. I'll delve into this in-depth later on in this article. First, I'll go over the two major steps you need to follow in order to run a successful campaign. Step 1: Start Early If you want to be president of your class or high school some day, you need to start working towards that goal early. Plan to join student council your freshman year, but don’t expect to be elected president.Freshman student council elections are usually a mess.Freshman elections typically happen within a month of starting school, so no one knows each other. The person elected president is usually the person whose name other students have heard the most.It’s not usually based on competence or trust. My recommendation for freshman student council elections: Run for one of the â€Å"smaller† offices such as secretary or treasurer.There is usually less competition for these positions, so you’ll have a better shot of being elected.During freshman year, your aim should just be to get on the council. Step 2: Maintain Relationships You need to work from the start to build relationships with your classmates so that they know and trust you. Students want to elect someone they like and know is competent.Be a leader in the classroom.Participate in class discussionsandget good grades, it’s how you’ll prove your competence.Don’t be the class clown or the student who’s always on their cell phone or asleep. Interact with the students around you.Sit with different groups at lunch.Talk to them about their concerns and what changes they’d like to see happen at the school. If you’re not currently on student council, ask if you can attend their meetings.Some student councils allow students who’re interested in joining to sit in on their meetings, and some host an occasional meeting (monthly, bi-monthly, annual, etc.) for students who’re not on the council to voice their concerns and ideas. Also, if you’re not currently on student council, ask members of student council if they need help with their events.It’s a great way to test out student council to see if it’s right for you, and it's also a great way to show you’re fit to be on student council/leading student council. With my advice, you won't be quite so lonely! How to Run a Winning Election The two steps I mentioned above will start you on the path to becoming president of your class, but to run a winning election you’ll need to do more. #1: Get Your Name Out There To win an election, you need to marketyourself.Start by creating aslogan, even if it’s as simple as â€Å"Lauren for Junior Class President.†You want to use one slogan for your campaign that will be used on all of your marketing materials so that your name becomes recognizable. If you don't come up with one slogan and instead use multiple slogans or designs, peoplemay get confused. You want one good slogan that you'll use across all of your material to ensure a clear, focused campaign that'll create name recognition. Think about all of the US presidential campaigns; the posters always have one design from which they never stray. #2: Put Up Posters With YourSlogan The posters can be super simple; even just a print out of the slogan on normal computer paper will work.However, you should have a lotof them.The exact number will vary proportionally to the number of students in your class (or school, if you’re running for the overall Student Government President).What I mean by that is if your class has 100 students, 10 posters may be enough, but if you have 1000 students in your class, you may want to put up 50 or more posters.Count on some posters being ripped down or disappearing.Most schools have rules against this, but it’s hard to catch someone ripping down a poster.Plan on making extras. As I mentioned earlier, whatever reason you decided to run (whether it was to improve school dances or improve the lunch menu) tell it to them!Ask them what they’d like to see happen at the school next year. Show them you’ll be a good listener as well as a good leader! #4: Ace Your Campaign Speech Some schools have candidates give speeches or debate.My school did not.If your school allows you to give a speech, definitely do so! Here are my recommended points to hit in your speech/debate. Introduce yourself (It may seem obvious, but it will helpstudentswho may not know you). â€Å"Hi, I’m Lauren Jones, and I’m running for Junior Class President.† Say why you want to be president and why you’re qualified. Your qualifications will bea combination of personal characteristics and past experiences and successes. â€Å"I'm responsible and agood listener. I served as Sophomore Class VP and fundraised more than $1,000 for the Red Cross.† State your platform (what you plan to do differently). â€Å"I plan to move our school dance to the Marriott Ballroom instead of our gym.† Say how you plan to accomplish your goals. â€Å"I will raise the money to move our dance to the Marriott Ballroom by hosting a school-wide bake sale.† End with your campaign slogan. â€Å"Remember, Lauren for Junior Class President.† These should be the main points you hit, but I’d recommend injecting some humor into it to make it more interesting.However, your speech should notbe too long (I’d recommend 2-3 minutes maximum).Make it concise and to the point or you’ll lose your audience.
